Indigenous Sign Initiative - Land Acknowledgement
In a world overwhelmed by advertising, signs, art and people, we lose the importance of understanding the world we live in. The Indigenous Sign Initiative - Land Acknowledgement is meant to give information of land, Indigenous originators, in the form of signs placed throughout public spaces to not just provide information, but stand as a beacon of recognizing spaces in plain site. In signs placed throughout suburban neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, the words “SOLIDARITY on native lands to enact change together for all” utilizes the aesthetics of parking signs/notices to communicate our deeper connection and objective on that which is now shared lands. Solidarity is an interesting word. Unity or agreement of feeling or action, particularly among individuals with a common interest. Regardless of geographic areas, race, creed or religious beliefs, we should be unified in the effort for people to “enact change together for all”. A reasonable statement. A reasonable request. Recognizing that this is done on Native land predisposes the ability to recognize where we are and that no matter what we do, this is the indelible truth. This move of solidarity will take some work, but in its elementary form, it is reasonable.
